New Kitchen / Historic House

We restored the exterior of this 1882 home, on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 The house survived the entire twentieth century without a "modern kitchen". It did however, have a bathroom carved out of one corner; severely damaging the original features of the south wall (backround). So that wall was the obvious choice to locate the refrigerator, microwave, plumbing chase to second floor and other "wall fixtures". These were built in a self supporting structure with only minimal contact to the existing wall. In that way the cabinets may be removed and the original wall restored if ever so desired. As seen from the dining room doorway; the 7 foot long elevated counter hides activity on the 12 foot long work island and can provide a buffet for serving guests. The walls, wainscotting, doors, windows, and service cupboard were restored. The new kitchen does not mimic the original cupboard in a new set of kitchen cabinets lining the walls. Rather, in the spirit of the old way, the new kitchen was designed as free standing furniture contemporary to its time. In that way it is not confused with and does not dimminish, obstruct or damage the original features. The serving counter buffers the food preparation area from the table and guest entry area. A multi-teared "chandelier" provides subtle up light and glare free task light; as it defines and modulates the space under the eleven foot high cieling. A detail the narrow end of the serving counter A Chofa, retired from duty on a Thai temple crest, now graces the cooks domain. Very weathered Teak with metalic glazed glass tiles, many of which are missing. A beautiful cut of Birdseye Maple veneer on the curved door and drawer fronts The lights turned low for an intimate meal
