This redesign took what had formerly been a separate dining/kitchen area and living room, and expanded the total space while eliminating the walls that had divided the rooms, creating a more open and airy space.
The kitchen was rimmed with custom-made cabinets. One of the challenges of this project was to allow each area to feel like its own space, while still remaining connected to the other spaces.
The windows were designed to be the correct height so that a person seated in the living room would have a clear view of the fields to the south.
The dining room buffet was designed to frame the living room windows in a way that diminishes the intervening space and emphasizes to the countryside beyond
The 30x34foot space is modulated by the columns, hutch, buffet, desk, and low cabinets into three intimate areas. Human scale is maintained under the cathedral ceiling by the beams, lighting structures and indirectly lighted frieze and window trim systems.
This shot shows the warm glow of the living room in the evening.
